Bled Island & the Church of the Assumption
Take a traditional pletna boat or row out to the lake’s sole island. Once there, climb the iconic 99 stone steps to the pilgrimage church. Ring the wishing bell—local legend says it grants good luck
Set in the heart of Lake Bled’s shimmering waters, Bled Island is Slovenia’s only natural island—a serene oasis steeped in beauty and myth. To reach it, visitors glide across the lake in traditional wooden pletna boats, rowed by skilled oarsmen whose trade has been passed down for generations. As the island grows closer, the emerald water, alpine air, and distant chime of the church bell set a mood of quiet wonder.
Bled Island is more than a destination—it is a symbol of harmony between nature and heritage. Surrounded by the Julian Alps and cloaked in ever-changing seasons, the island captures the essence of Slovenia’s spirit: mystical, gentle, and quietly unforgettable.

Bled Castle
Rising proudly from a sheer cliff 130 meters above the lake, Bled Castle is Slovenia’s oldest and one of its most captivating historic sites.
Its red rooftops and stone walls stand in perfect contrast to the turquoise waters below and the peaks of the Julian Alps beyond. The castle has watched over the lake for more than a thousand years, guarding legends, stories, and the slow rhythm of time in the Upper Carniola region. Within its fortified walls, history comes alive. Visitors can explore a museum chronicling medieval life, witness the craft of old-world printing, or pause in the Romanesque chapel, its walls still echoing with centuries of faith.
Yet Bled Castle offers more than just stories of the past—it offers a view that lingers in memory. From its terraces, the entire lake unfolds like a painting: the island, the mountains, the gentle towns below. Whether visited in the glow of sunrise or the quiet of dusk, this stronghold of stone and sky remains a place of reflection, majesty, and pure Slovenian soul.
