Ljubljana: Where the River Whispers Stories

Imagine a city that feels like a living storybook—where emerald-green rivers glide beneath stone bridges guarded by dragons, and cobblestone streets hum with the warmth of outdoor cafés.
This is Ljubljana, Europe’s "Green Capital," a place where Baroque palaces and Art Nouveau facades rise like elegant stage sets against a backdrop of forested hills. At its heart stands Ljubljana Castle, a medieval sentinel watching over a city that pulses with creativity: artists spill into the streets, musicians fill ancient squares with melody, and the air tastes of freshly baked potica from the bustling Open Market.
By day, you’ll wander car-free lanes lined with blooming linden trees; by night, you’ll follow lantern-lit paths along the river, past floating galleries and hidden wine bars. It’s a capital that feels like a village—a place where sustainability isn’t a trend but a way of life.
EasyJet has increased capacity from London and is also now flying from Manchester, so even more people can easily enjoy a holiday with Completely Slovenia.

The Beating Heart of Slovenia

Small capital with big heart

Ljubljana is a small capital city but with a big heart. A city built on a human scale and one that puts its people first. The city centre long ago banished cars to make room for more outdoor cafes and restaurants, cultural events, open-air markets, bike lanes, and shopping areas.
If you’re more of an outdoorsy type, you won’t be disappointed either. Slovenians love sports, preferably outdoors. You’ll find hiking and biking paths in the heart of the city, or you can explore beyond city limits and go for world-class hiking, skiing, white water rafting and other adrenaline experiences.
Ljubljana is the green capital of a green country. The area on either side of the river, with its picturesque bridges and the central market, owes its distinctive appearance to the great architect Jože Plečnik. The city of thousands of events is surrounded by parks and areas of protected nature.
In fact, Ljubljana is a great base as you can actually get to most parts of the country within 2 hours, so you can always explore the country from here if you just want to stay in one place.

Central Slovenia

Beyond Ljubljana’s vibrant streets, Central Slovenia is full of places that feel like stepping into a living storybook.
Kamnik is a medieval town with two castles, a monastery, and a colourful street lined with artisan workshops. The town is inextricably linked with the Velika Planina plateau and its shepherding traditions — just minutes from Slovenia’s largest arboretum and the Terme Snovik spa, the closest spa retreat to the capital.
Nearby, Škofja Loka and the valleys of Selca and Poljane offer a picturesque backdrop for the Škofja Loka Passion Play, recognised on UNESCO’s List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Here, one Loka (meadow), two valleys, and three mountain ranges weave together stories of artistry, handicrafts, and timeless culinary traditions.
Idrija, a UNESCO World Heritage town, boasts the world’s second-largest mercury mine and is the birthplace of Slovenia’s intricate lace-making craft. Visitors can also discover its ingenious “klavže” — historic water barriers often called Slovenia’s pyramids — and explore the UNESCO Geopark that celebrates this unique industrial and natural heritage.
In Novo mesto, the heart of the Dolenjska region, you’ll find archaeological treasures of global importance. Known as the town of situlae, it’s surrounded by gentle wine hills producing the region’s famous Cviček wine, while the mysterious Gorjanci Hills whisper local legends. Don’t miss Otočec Castle, Slovenia’s only water castle, perched on a tiny island in the River Krka.
For nature lovers, the ancient forests of Kočevsko and Notranjska are home to one of Europe’s largest populations of brown bears. Around 560 bears roam freely here, offering a rare chance to join a guided expedition or photo hunt and learn how humans and bears coexist in this untamed landscape.
